Malaysia : International Driving Permit (2012 — 2013)

International Driving Permit (Surat Kebenaran Membawa Kereta Antarabangsa) issued by Malaysia's Road Transport Department is considered expensive at RM150 which is valid only for one year. In comparison to Denmark which costs only 25kr. (roughly RM15)[1]

According to the Geneva Convention treaty (1949), this facility has been agreed by the countries that signed it.

In order to apply for International Driving Permit (IDP), You need:
 
  1. Valid driving license for Class B2 or D.
  2. Photocopy of the above license (Both sides).
  3. Original and photocopy of identity card (Both sides).
  4. 2 passport size photographs.
  5. Complete Form JPJ L1.
  6. Payment of RM150 per year.

You need to surrender your domestic license to JPJ as you are not allowed to hold 2 types of licenses at a time. If you no longer require the IDP, you may be go to the JPJ offices to get back your domestic license. It should be noted that renewal fee for IDP is RM150 per annum, compared with domestic license which is only RM30 per annum.

The IDP can be renewed with the following procedures:
 
  1. The license may be renewed in Malaysia only.
  2. Provide 2 passport size photographs.
  3. Present your IDP for renewal.
  4. Complete Form JPJ L1.
  5. RM150 per annum for the renewal fee.
