The American passports are issued to nationals-non-citizen and citizens of America for international travel and for citizen as a proof of his American citizenship. By law, a valid unexpired U.S. passport (or passport card) is conclusive (and not just prima facie) proof of U.S. citizenship, and has the same force and effect as proof of United States citizenship as certificates of naturalization or of citizenship, if issued to a U.S. citizen for the full period allowed by law.
From 1976, the passport color was changed from green to dark blue.

You must not alter any dates or make any changes in your description, on the photograph, or on any other page of this passport. You are permitted, however, to amend or update personal information for your own convenience on the inside front cover.
EXPIRATION. This passport is valid for five years unless expressly limited to a shorter period. The expiration date is given on page two.
LOSS OF NATIONALITY. You may lose your United States nationality by being naturalized in, or by taking an oath or making a declaration of allegiance to, a foreign state; or by serving in the armed forces or accepting employment under the government of a foreign state. For detailed information, consult the nearest American consular office.
DUAL NATIONALS. A person is considered a dual national when he owes allegiance to more than one country at the same time. A claim to allegiance may be based on facts of birth, marriage, parentage or naturalization. A dual national may, while in the jurisdiction of the other country which considers him its national, be subject to all of its laws, including being conscripted for military service. Dual nationals who encounter problems should contact the nearest American consular office.

GENERAL INFORMATION
IMMUNIZATIONS. Under the International Health Regulations adopted By the World Health Organization, an International Certificate of Vaccination against smallpox may be required as a condition of entry to any country. An International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever or cholera may be required by some countries. For return to the United States, only a smallpox certificate will be required if, within the past 14 days, a traveler has visited a country reporting smallpox. Specific information on required and recommended immunizations and prophylaxis for travel to all areas of the world may be obtained from your local or State health department.
HEALTH INSURANCE. Persons considering foreign travel should determine what health insurance coverage, if any, they have while outside the United States. Social Security Medicare does not cover health care costs outside the United States except under limited circumstances in Canada and Mexico.
CUSTOM SERVICE. The pamphlet, "Know Before You Go," gives you current pertinent information about Customs requirements, and how they apply to articles acquired abroad. Obtain a copy from your nearest Customs office or from the U.S. Customs Service, P.O. Box 7118, Washington, D.C. 20044.
TREASURY. Treasury regulations prohibit the unlicensed purchase or importation of merchandise of Cuban, North Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian or Southern Rhodesian origin. For information, write to the Office of Foreign Assets Control, Treasury Department, Washington. D.C. 20220.
AGRICULTURE. Your reentry into the United States will be speeded if you bring with you NO foreign meat, other animal products, birds, animals, fruits, vegetables, plants, soil or other agricultural items.
