Version 2003 was issued from 01/01/2003 until 30/06/2013 when it was replaced by Version 2013.

The card is only obligatory for Croatian citizens as of 16 years of age. Since Croatia's accession to the EU, in accordance with the Treaty of Accession 2011, on 1 July 2013 the Croatian identity card (except for the pre-2003 version) became a valid travel document within the entire European Economic Area.
 
Trub was printed on the top-right of the back side which was considered an advertisement for the card manufacturer.
